Uncle Bob's Defensive Driving Rules

Several years ago, I wrote a series of essays, published on another website, that addressed the whys and wherefores of safe driving. I believe it is now appropriate to update that series -- the precepts of self-defense have not changed, but my approach to teaching them constantly changes. I will be adding these updated rules to this blog over the next few days and weeks.

I have been teaching defensive driving and traffic law in Arizona for many years. I managed Arizona's court-run defensive driving program for 13 years and during that time I was trained by Arizona's courts as a civil traffic hearing officer. Beyond traffic law, as a professional driver and a pilot, I have always been interested in operating moving equipment or vehicles safely, not only what to do but why. These articles are the result of my roughly 45 years of experience in these areas.

Please be aware, that while this series is about defensive driving techniques that can be used anywhere, in any instance where a traffic law is discussed, I am referring to Arizona laws only; I am not familiar with laws in other states or countries. Your state may be the same, or it may be different.

In the end, there will be about 70 of these rules... please keep checking back for each update! Thanks for reading... Uncle Bob
